Tesamorelin is a synthetic peptide that functions as a growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH) analog. It works by stimulating the pituitary gland to produce and release more natural growth hormone (GH), which in turn increases levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Through this pathway, tesamorelin influences fat metabolism, particularly visceral adipose tissue (fat stored around internal organs). It helps reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV-associated lipodystrophy.
